Investing Practice 101: Namaste Making Money ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ

Updated: Oct 20, 2019

So no one told you life was gonna be this way. Your job's a joke, you're broke... Sound familiar? Yes it's the Friends theme song, but it's also all of us.

Okay, so maybe that's not entirely true; some of us have pretty sick jobs or maybe a boyfriend/girlfriend who actually likes ALL of our Instagrams and watches ALL of our stories (can't relate tbh), but most of us have wanted, or desperately needed, some extra cash at some point - unless you're first lady-daughter Ivanka Trump. Vank, if you're reading this, pls retweet.

Money is harddd, stressful and it causes tension and (let's be real) jealousy among peers. We want to travel the world, attend the festivals and the brunches, buy that Barry's Bootcamp membership, not live paycheck to paycheck, pay off our loans, retire early, take care of our current or future families, sit around polishing our diamonds, etc.

So wtf can we actually do about this? While it's not realistic for most of us to go out into the world and demand a 50% raise (although you def should and report back), and ain't nobody got time for side hustle (yet some of you do it anyway and ya'll are queens ๐Ÿ‘‘), there is one MAJOR way you can grow your wealth. AND you can do it in the privacy of your own home in nuthin' but your VS PINK undies from sophomore year of HS.

It's called INVESTING. And by investing, we mean in the stock market, not in that Bumble match from literally 2 days ago (although truly wish you all the best).

Now before your head starts spinning with algorithms, charts and investment bankers, take a deep breath - and for those number-lovers like us, keep it in your pants ladies. Because you want to know a secret? Anyone can do it. ANYONE. No joke. You just gotta put in the time - and eventually, the money. And by eventually it could be months or even a couple years from now! That's right, you can start practicing investing before you're ready to spend a single penny - and you shouldn't spend ANYTHING before you're well on your journey.

While I've been interested in investing in the stock market since I was 17, it wasn't until about 2 years ago that I was introduced to investing as a practice. I stumbled upon a podcast called InvestED, hosted by Danielle Town and her world-renowned, investing guru father, Phil Town. Danielle's approach to investing as a practice completely rocked my world. As a lawyer who rebuked the investing world despite being the daughter of a famous investor (ala the preacher's daughter in Footloose), and who cringed at the thought of working with numbers, she refused to go anywhere near the investing world. It wasn't until she was confronted with the mentally, emotionally and physically draining reality of having to work a full-speed-ahead lawyer life until her mid-sixties, that she begrudgingly got into investing. The conception of investing as a practice is completely originated by Danielle Town herself, and you can join her on her journey in The Invested Practice monthly newsletter for $19/month. See our full review of Danielle's investing journey in her book, InvestED here.

Many of us already have practices - whether it's yoga, cooking, meditation, art, writing, music, other creative or physical outlets - that enrich our lives (does amassing a v impressive lip kit collection and curating a perfect Instagram aesthetic count?? Because I live for dis). Investing can easily become one of these practices. Yes it takes dedication, but is a few hours a week of commitment to a new hobby worth retiring 15 years early? 20? 15 or 20 extra years of traveling the world unencumbered, or spending quality time with your children or spouse or whatever the fuck kind of doodle you have at that point?!

Think about it, you probably already spend a few minutes a day reading or listening to the news or have companies at which you are dedicated shoppers, and you already have a subject matter expertise in a certain industry based off of where you work or live. I work in tech and live in the Bay Area, whereas my co-founder of this blog and twinny, Jenise, works in entertainment and lives in LA. Our locations and jobs already give us a knowledge of these industries purely through osmosis. So you already know more stuff than you think...it's just a matter of becoming more aware, mindful and tuned into the world around you. Investing is basically meditation. It's all about mindfulness and learning to perceive your surroundings with an investing mindset.

Yeah okay, sounds good beezy...but how do I do that...? Well lucky for you, we've been on this practice for awhile and have made the commitment to dedicate our lives to this practice.

We're not asking you to spend a dime until young grasshopper has become the master. We're just inviting you along on our investing journeys, hoping that you'll learn the ropes with us until you're ready to dive head first to invest in your very first company in which you truly believe. We'll be candid with you as we reflect on our practices - what mistakes have we made in the past, which companies are we loving and hating and why, our take on the state of the world and economy, and where we are putting our dollars.

How will this work? We'll post an investing practice article every month with a to-do list to complete before you move onto the next month. All you gotta do is read and do the things, and you're on your way to enlightenment and living a more enriched, interesting, healthier and wealthier life!!! See ya betches there ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ

You'll never shine if you don't glow,

<3 Leanne
